“Nutches”
THE LAST KINECTION

Album Review, By Carly Wallace (aka Cjay – Presenter of the Big Brekky Show)

Im often asked the question, ‘Why do I love Australian Hip Hop'?… As a lover of Hip Hop and its movement, its hard for me to define the reasons why I love it… When it comes to Australian indigenous hip hop, I can easily state exactly why I identify with it and love it so much.

As society changes, and the years go by, more and more of our culture is lost or distorted… Indigenous hip hop, is the strength, unity and hope for many of our young murrie men and women. It's a symbol of self expression, and individuality… A cry for help, a way of off loading steam or dealing with self identity problems, and more importantly, it's a tool of empowerment, modern story telling, and exposure of real issues facing a race of people.

Every so often, I am exposed to an artist/s who capture my thoughts on the Australian hip hop industry and its development. Artists such as ‘Coops, Matty B, Sneake 1, Dadda Murri, The Street Warriros, The Young Prophets, Pegz, Brotha Black, RUCL, Wire Mc, The Herd, Bliss n Eso, The Hilltop Hoods a name of few, are all evidence that the Australian Hip Hop Industry is well and truly alive and thriving. Another group who has since re-ignited my hope for the Australian but more importantly, the indigenous hip hop scene, are ‘The Last Kinection' …

Brother and sister act Naomi and Joel Wenitong team up with DJ Jay Tee , To deliver, what I personally believe to be one of the Best Australian Hip Hop Albums ever released. ‘Nutches' is described by the group as ‘The Soundtrack to their lives, as Australian Indigenous people (murries) living an Urban Australian Life'. With the very first track off the album, ‘Worth Marching For' featuring ‘Brother Black' , your given an insight into what the rest of the album will deliver. Hard, meaningful, Raw and powerful lyrics, mixed with hard, catchy, addictive and carefully orchestrated beats.

Not only does the group sample a range of scratching, their inclusions of guitars and samples are evidence, that they really are a force to be reckoned with in the Australian hip hop industry. The difference between good hip hop and amazing hip hop isn't always in the beat or the scratch, but the lyrics and the flow. Hard Hitting Tracks such as ‘Not Your Time' , takes a look at the cold reality of suicide, something that is rife within our indigenous communities. It tells of the darker side, and the brighter side of overcoming the dramas in your life, and coming out on top.
